Paradise Suffers focuses on the empty / abandoned fountains of Athens. The artists map, explore, ‘interview’ and ultimately inhabit some of these fountains in a paradoxical way. The performative interventions they make inside them as well as the everyday activity around them are captured in this experimental documentary.
The work aims to explore the symbolic presence of the empty fountains in the public space and the way they reflect society’s current state. While fountains are considered to be symbols of prosperity and life or even containers of wishes and desires (coins landing in their bottoms etc.) , they have been transformed into metaphorical spaces of lost hope and actual sites of neglect.
Through this work the artists reclaim, redefine and reimagine citizen’s relationship with public space.
